Sounds good: As long as the iPod boots into diskmode, you don't have to
worry..

You don't have to low-level format it..
You could use the iPod-Updater from MacOSX to RESTORE it..
..or: do it on linux:
- Boot the iPod into disk-mode
- fdisk it (2 partitions.. see the manual)
- create a VFAT fs on the SECOND partition
- flash the firmware to the FIRST partition
- Unplug the iPod..
..well.. maybe your Firmware is messed-up as well
I'll send you a link to a new FW..
(You can't use apples .exe / .dmg files on linux :-/ )
