Yup.. At first I didn't and had lots of other problems until I realized
the oversight.

Oh wow.. you're kidding.  However, upon reading this I tried mounting
either of the two partitions as vfat, to no avail.

# mount -t vfat /dev/sdf1 /mnt/ipod/
mount: /dev/sdf1: can't read superblock
# mount -t vfat /dev/sdf2 /mnt/ipod/
mount: /dev/sdf2: can't read superblock

I'm attached directly to the back of my machine.  It *IS* a USB1.1
(older Intel 440BX motherboard), but I don't think that should make a
big difference (?)

Any clues as to how to downgrade the iPod?
