So you are running this on Win32, correct?

Could you send me your iTunesDB (before running gnupod_INIT.pl) ?

This might be a weird 'I am Windows and i do not understand what a binary file 
is'
problem :-)

You can enforce the filetype using the 'mediatype' tag:

 <file ... mediatype="6" />

would tag the file as a video podcast.
