Follow-up Comment #1:
Please use tr \r \n to convert the line endings, possibly converting them
back when you are done with any Unix utility. Note that grep will "act
strange" also with Windows line endings, for example
$ echo $'abcrndefr' | grep c$
$ echo $'abcrndefr' | grep c.$
abc
