I followed up with another patch that fixes an obscure problem in a not-so-obscure Japanese encoding (SHIFT-JIS). The encoding probably did not really work in 2.5.x (the test is skipped there, initial detection of the character set fails), but was broken further by the fix. :-)
I didn't check if Norihirio's patch broke it too, or it worked. Paolo
