as it contains a test case showing the bug the commit was designed to solve.
I was not aware! Thank you, this is helpful...though not as helpful as it
would have been if a tbl-less example had also been presented.

Yes, and over the years there have been several commits fixing problems in it,
including one that claimed to fix the "remaining bugs"

As my beloved Hitchens would have said, thus was a hostage given to fortune.
More importantly, there's where a set of regression tests would have proven
valuable.
