Yes. And, if I'm understanding correctly, also to your option 1.

OK. So the remaining questions are:
* Is this a NEWS-worthy change?
* Does this warrant a bug report against afmtodit?
Comment #9 seems to call for at least two other tickets, in its "In the short
term" and "In the longer term" paragraphs.
