It looks to me like 2019's commit 14c4fd87
<http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/groff.git/commit/?id=14c4fd87> documented
these two calls in gropdf(1) (which I realized when you quoted the passage in
question on http://lists.gnu.org/r/groff/2022-07/msg00164.html).  Am I
misunderstanding your point here, or had you forgotten about this commit when
you wrote comment #1?
