Installing GRUB without running GRUB.

Hi, like I mentioned in an earlier post I'm working on a installer for
the AtheOS operating system. I whould like to install GRUB from that
installer after the OS itself is installed. Is there any documentation
somewhere on how to do this? I guess that some pointers must be
updated in atleast the stage1 loader and maybe the config file path in
stage2. Is the location of this defined and or documented somewhere?
How ridgid are this defined? Is the locations of this info moved
around often across different versions of GRUB?
