This reminds me of my booting from ZIP disk problem. I patched grub
to read a fixed geometry from the boot sector, just as DOS does it.
The patch didn't get into grub at that time and the boot-sector has
changed too much since, so it doesn't apply cleanly.
I have made a new version of that patch, but never really tested it.
