Grub stops at Stage1

Hi there,
I installed Mandrake 7.2. from a CD-ROM a while ago. It came with grub which - 
until yesterday - worked fine. Since yesterday it stops at stage 1. I found 
descriptions of similar problems in this list's and other archives but I don't 
really understand the answers :-(. What should I - being only moderately 
computer-literate - do? By the way, I run Mandrake and Windows ME and I use 
Partition Magic (I haven't installed Boot Magic though), if that is of any help.
