help with linux 2.4

Excuse me for my english which is poor and the fact that I'm a newbie :(

 

I've compiled linux 2.4 and I placed the bzImage in /boot

then I added in menu.lst

 

title Linux 2.4

kernel hda(0,5)/bzImage root=/dev/hda8        // about, I've forgotten a little

 

Then, at boot, the system gives me

 

Linux decompression.................

System halt

 

Ran out of data - -

 

 

What can I do???
