Debugging stage1 (was GRUB loops, printing "GRUB")

I've looked at the source, and it appears clear that the problem I reported 
(GRUB loops, printing "GRUB")
earlier happens in stage1.  As far as I can tell, there is no branching back 
from below the point where it
is printed.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to go about determining the cause of the 
loop.  GRUB-specific, please.
