theres not much more to say
after i did make install with the cvs head
i copied the files from /usr/local
to /bin, /sbin and /boot/grub (as appropriate)

then i ran grub-install which appeard to work fine.

unfortunately upon reboot i got only got a message saying "loading stage 
1.5"
(not sure about exact message but something very like that)
I had to boot from cd and reinstall 0.91
Again I could not get grub-install to work (due to mismatched stage1 stage2)
I tried a suggestion to run grub-install twice with no effect
So I installed grub using the grub shell
/sbin/grub
root (hd0,4)
setup (hd0)
quit

I currently have the symptom that presence of "savedefault" in menu.lst 
causes
a message about mismatched stage1/stage2.  I must delete the savedefault 
line to boot.
and grub-install DOES work now (but only after using setup in the grub 
shell)

curiously - if i wait for the timeout the machine boots with no complaints.
