Windows XP on second HD/grub 0.91

I've got windows 2000 and several GNU/Linux installations on my primary HD
with Grub.
all works fine.
now I try to boot Win XP from a second HD.
1st try:
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

results in a line of garbage on the screen and hangs (same without
makeactive)

2nd try:
root (hd1)
chainloader +1

gives me : filesystem type unknown,using whole disk and it boot win2k from
1st HD.

setting 2nd HD on top of bootlist in BIOS works - XP gets loaded.
Am I going wrong somewhere, or is there a problem with grub and XP?
