Thanks for the responses, Hari and Ilquiz. In the end, the problem was
related to the initrd I had constructed for the boot process. Apparently
there was an issue with the kernel/initrd interaction which resulted in a
"failure to load into memory scenario." It is kind of hard for me to
describe, but the problem was fixed when rebuilt my initrd from scratch. If
I isolate it any further and manage to find where the bug was, I'll let you
folks know.
