Hello Christoph,

Thanks for example, your explanation is great. I'm still having
problems with very basic steps, however. If I just:
cat stage1 > /dev/sda

and then use fdisk to look at the disk's parition, I get:
Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sda: 1 heads, 62 sectors, 1011 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 62 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda2   ?  40298297   1449638 943175203   be  Unknown
Partition 2 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
     phys=(271, 0, 53) logical=(40298296, 0, 55)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
     phys=(488, 218, 61) logical=(1449637, 0, 22)
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(488, 218, 61) should be (488, 0, 62)
/dev/sda4   ?         1         1         0   4f  QNX4.x 3rd part
Partition 4 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
     phys=(181, 182, 1) logical=(0, 0, 1)
Partition 4 has different physical/logical endings:
     phys=(1022, 233, 29) logical=(69273666, 0, 4)
Partition 4 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(1022, 233, 29) should be (1022, 0, 62)

Anything I do after that with fdisk or mke2fs simply destroys
whatever was in stage1 ... any hints?

Karim
