Summary:  Cannot use grub as bootloader with Compaq SmartArray

Original Submission:  I am trying to use the grub from Debian sid(GNU/Linux) on 
a box with a Compaq SmartArray controller:

# grub-install '(hd0)'
/dev/ida/c0d0p6 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

I manually modified /boot/grub/device.map to have the following line:

(hd0)   /dev/ida/c0d0p6

That did not solve the problem. Here are some of the syslog messages from dmesg:

Kernel version is Linux 2.2.20-compact from the Debian compact install
