Is there a standard way for installation programs to read data off the
currently installed GRUB loader?

Example:
I installed RedHat 7.2 and RedHat 7.3 on the same machine both using the
Grub loader on dev /dev/hda master boot record. When I installed 7.3 it
overwrote the bootloader from 7.2 and I had to manually figure out what
needed to go in the grub.conf files and run grub-install. I would imagine
if I added Caldera or Debian to this system they would also install there
own copy of Grub and overwrite the existing ones.

It would be nice if there was a standard way for install programs to get
this information from the installed loader and just add there entries to
what can be loaded.
