a couple of questions about GRUB

I have a couple of questions about grub, I hope you can answer them :-)

1.- how does grub do the drive mapping to the grub notation (when there
is no devices.map file)? is always such as:

/dev/hda  --> (hd0)
/deb/hdb  --> (hd1)
   ...    -->  ...

or does some more intelligent assignment? (i.e: using (hd1) for /dev/hdc 
when /dev/hdb doesn't exist)

2.- Is there any kind of fingerprint to certainly know that grub (and not 
another bootloader)is installed in a MBR?

I'm developing a tool for configuring grub and it could be really cool
to find out the answers :-P
