Sorry Thierry, first reply posted direct to you. 

You answered me the same way some months ago. I have got the patch and script,
and am just starting to use it. I am hoping to issue my next bootable CD in 
the near future,  (LFS boot CD).  It works great.

It will be no problem porting the patch to whatever the official version of 
grub is.   I could even post the tested patch and script to my web space.

My worry would be that this disobeys grub's official maintainers; it is a pity
that this is not included in an official release, making grub complete, and
not dependant on lilo for distro CDs.
