Problem solved!

A fresh install of Fedora Core 1 gave me a fresh version of GRUB (0.93)
and - probably more important - a fresh MBR. After that fresh install
"wake on lan" works flawlessly.

Please note that the previous version of GRUB I was using on that PC was
installed manually (I was running Red Hat Linux 9 at that time). I
suppose I must have done something wrong when installing GRUB manually
... slightly embarrassing. Anyway, if somebody would like to investigate
how I managed to install GRUB in such a way that I was able to boot
"manually" but was not able to do a "wake on lan" (which I find rather
odd) I would be happy to provide some further details ... just send me a
mail.
