Well, I've read the FM a number of times, and did so again carefully

I concede with pleasure you did ... .
The install and setup commands for creating a boot floppy look for a
/boot/grub/menu.lst. But no such menu.lst gets generated. I have to
create it by hand. Is that correct? (I do have the file in the
/boot/grub directory of my hd).
Not quite. Though you might be in the unfortunate situation that it has
been lost some time.
There had been a problem with the Sarge Netinstaller, that did not
create the entries for the non-Debian operating systems, so they had to
be added manually.
But generally, the menu.lst is created correctly by grub without any
user intervention.
The grub setup command searches for the stage files in /boot/grub, but
apparently won't look for them on my hard disk in that location, but
only on the floppy, where they first must be copied into a proper
directory tree.
No, setup looks exactly for the files on the harddisk.
'find' is the keyword to look for here. Depending on partitioning, you
need one '/boot' more or less ...
My main question is whether this approach of changing the root command
to point to the wrong disk sequence is likely to cause problems?
This is beyond my flimsy knowledge of grub, sorry
I tried fiddling with the map file in /boot without luck, and tried a
map command in the menu, also without luck.
Here my personal 2 sen:
I'd try to remove grub ( apt-get ... --purge) and make sure to delete
all remaining dirs and files; as well as /boot/grub.
Then I'd reinstall with apt-get, create the boot-floppy as described
from harddisk,
tried all the boots from the grub> prompt on the floppy,
did a find ...
and a setup (hd0).
Good luck,
Uwe
