It is possible, since I'm using it quite some time in different
versions with my home rolled splash screens, but it's a bit
complicated, since it involves some patches and related packages.
I'm doing this with SuSE, and they produce most of them.. Have a look
at their gfxboot package and their grub patches as a start.
