I have tried it under windows 2000/XP with MSYS/GCC-3.4.4 with the MSYS
developer toolkit but configure receives an error stating that "neither start
nor _start is defined"
how would I get past that?

Do you mean to ask whether you can compile grub under Windows? Even if
possible, it might not be that easy. You might want to start trying with
cygwin and not native Windows compilers.
It's easy to compile it under Linux.
