Follow-up Comment #4, bug #17882 (project grub):
I've tested Robin's patch on an Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi/AP, with a pair of SATA
drives on ICH8R containing Windows XP as RAID-1, and one PATA drive on the
Jmicron onboard controller with CentOS 4.4 x86_64 installed in it.
The patch does indeed extend GRUB support for 16 drives: units up to hd15 are
valid though they may result in Error 21 (drive not found). Units hd16 and
beyond are invalid.
Nevertheless this patch doesn't seem to help GRUB find the ATA drive. It just
freezes with Error 21 after loading stage 2, or simply ends on a GRUB shell
where the ATA drive is nowhere to be found (but the ICH8R RAID volumes are!).
I guess there must be some other problem in this case, besides the 8-drive
limit. I haven't succeeded with LILO yet either, but at least it loads the
kernel and only gets stuck upon trying to mount the root filesystem.
