Splash image not showing with hidden menu

Ok, I would appreciate any help. I am having a problem with hidden menu and
GRUB 1.96. It is supposed to show "Booting ... in ... seconds" with the
chosen splashimage as background, but I get only a black screen. When I
press a key, I still get the menu with splashimage. How can I fix this?
