Glad you found it.
I was originally thinking it would be sufficient to rely on the system
versions of those dependencies, on whatever distro the person is
using, but it turned out that sometimes they are too old. If the
system version will work "everywhere", it's preferable to use that I
think.
Have you tried compiling any of the GNU games? I'm not familiar with
the libs for those, like SDL, etc so if there is anything that is
broken let me know.
(Sorry for the delay in replying - I have been at the GNU Hackers
meeting since the end of last week so I was not reading my email.)
