That is quite old and a lot of bugs have been fixed since that revision.

Perhaps a "make clean" would help, but it shouldn't be necessary.

That's the perfect way in doing so :-)

This is not necessary.

A look into my crystal ball tells me that you might have a file GV in the 
directory "/usr/share/X11/app-defaults" (or similar, depending on your 
distribution). You have to remove that file as it has preference over the 
resources GNU gv supplies.
