--safer and --nosafer are options to gv that control whether gv passes -dSAFER or -dNOSAFER to gs.
The default safer setting for gv is the value of GV.gsSafer in .gv in your $HOME login directory.
Something is wrong if gs is seeing --safer or --nosafer instead of -dSAFER or -dNOSAFER.
Check that you did not replace -dSAFER with --nosafer in the command line that gv sends to gs in State -> Ghostscript Options ...

Hello William,

just a note to report that the www.brew.sh "Homebrew The Missing
Package Manager for macOS (or Linux)" installed version of gs does run
with -dSAFER as default.

The --nosafer option is absent from the 9.55.0 version that runs on my
MacBook Air under Catalina.

% man gs

revealed that the option has been renamed to -dNOSAFER

This option appears to pass successfully through ps2pdf.

Is it possible to run an alias or a flag in .zshrc to alter the
default -dSAFER behaviour?

Kind regards,

Max
