1) I agree with Bob's analysis that this is likely a problem with the
sunfreeware build, since you specifically said the file is 3gb.
2) But the gzip file format is limited to 4gb anyway, which you are
getting "close" to, relatively speaking.
3) So you might look into bzip2 (bzip.org) or lzma
(http://tukaani.org/lzma/), neither of which have that limitation (as
far as I know) and both of which compress better, anyway. lzma has
both better compression and faster decompression than bzip2.
