I will send you an unzipped file when I get the next failure for a file that
does not contain sensitive data which prohibits
Me from sending you the file for your diagnostics to determine what/if the
sporadic problem may be.
You write the following
" but it's more likely that your file
system has a bug, or that some other process corrupted the file"
I do need your diagnostics as my troubleshooting led me to you. I drew my
conclusion from:
The gunzip on the Sun box worked fine.
The binary sftp to the Linux box showed same number of bytes for the .gz file.
The gunzip on the Linux box gor the crc error.
I did an sftp to a different mount point on the Linux box and I got the same
crc error.
I think you can see how I came to a logical possible conclusion, but it is not
conclusive until you can reproduce the error
Or determine that it is not the gzip utility but other factors I have not yet
ruled out.
Regards and thanks for your quick response. It is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
WArren

This indicates that the file is corrupted. It's conceivable
this is a gzip problem, but it's more likely that your file
system has a bug, or that some other process corrupted the file.
If it's a gzip bug, we'll need a self-contained test case to
help us reproduce that, e.g., a copy of the uncompressed data
and a script that will generate the diagnostic.

That's odd: on my SunOS 5.10 box the bundled gzip is 1.4:
$ /usr/bin/gzip -V | sed 1q
gzip 1.4
Maybe you need to install patches to bring your Solaris
system up to date? But anyway, I doubt whether this
problem depends on gzip versioning.
