Thanks for reporting the problem.This by far the most-commonly reported gzip bug, and I'm thinking we might as well fix it by decompressing the input and counting bytes, much as pigz -lt does. This is slow, but nowadays it seems worth it to reduce confusion. Proposed gzip patch attached. (I have not installed this.)
