Oh doctor, do you think there is any
chance?
You must not mind what a sick person says, madam. I
have another idea, and a much better one.
What right has she to get ill and make me ill
likethis? Shut that window and pull down that blind and close thosecurtains at
once.
A chop at breakfast, rather underdone, issometimes
very helpful. Sell the necklace and buy yoursalvation with the proceeds. Mrs
Mopplygoes to the bedside table, the nurse going to the patients left.
She unfastens the sash andthrows it right up.
Whatever have you got into your silly head now? But its delicious, because Im
dreaming that Im perfectly well.
I wouldnt take fivethousand a year to be a
nurse.
I feel such a responsibilityif anything is left
undone to cure her. It may have lurked here since the house wasbuilt. If there is a
microbe it cannot be measles: it must be parameasles.
She then makes for the door where the
electricswitch is. In her lily hand was a copy of TheLadys Pictorial. Sweetie and I
will be more thansatisfied with fifty per cent. The nurse, left alone with her
patient, pays no attention to her,but goes to the window. The patient, leftalone,
begins to stir in her bed.
You knowits not true; and it does hurt me so.
Nurse: see that she is never uncoveredfor a moment. In no other way can our
hackneyed phrase responsiblegovernment acquire any real meaning. The bell is on your
bed, close to your hand: look atit. Its a cure for screaming and hysterics
andtantrums.
And the poverty of thepriest was opulence compared
to the poverty of the proletarian. It must bethat new sleeping draught the doctor
gave me. Why doesnt she die and release me from mysufferings? The Monster wanders
away behind the screen. I have so often known a change of medicine work wonders. But
if we can turn her outto grass she may put up some good looks.
The microbe of measles has never been discovered.
Tell me the worst: I have dreaded it all my life.
It must bethat new sleeping draught the doctor gave
me.
He is still in his earlythirties, and quite
goodlooking.
