I don't know about Hurd either but under Linux, when a mouse is ps2, protocol
should be set to 'none' (gpmconfig)
and XFree86 (at least 3.3.6) should be set to
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "PS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"

Looks like a protocol mismatch. The same thing happened to me
in Linux when I choose the wrong protocol. I have never set up
X in the hurd, but here are some idéas:
1. Maybe ps/2 should be written ps2?
2. What protocol does /hurd/mouse output? Is the X server set
to this protocol?
Maybe someone who knows can give better advice :/
