looking at the package, i think it'd be nice to re-do debian/rules to use
more modern packaging with debhelper and dbs-style building. do you mind
if i rewrite debian/rules?

I don't have much experience with dbs-style packaging though. Jeff, what
do you suggest? cdbs?
