I then looked at the source for lt_dlopenext, and found the bug in my
program (sorry for the bug report):

When I replace that with

   handle = lt_dlopenadvise (filename, advise);

it works.

Note that the example in the manual contains the "&".  So this report
turns out to be the result of a documentation bug.
