Version 1.6.5 prints scores to far to the right

I have installed lilypond 1.6.5 from the rpm for redhat 8.0. I find
that the dvi output starts printing about 1/3 of the way in from the
left-hand margin (If I specify indent = -70, then then first line of
music appears to start in about the right place), and chopping off the score at 
the right.

This happens both for newly created .ly files, and .ly files that
worked perfectly with version 1.4.9.

I'm using a4 paper.
