can't find file: `init.midi'

Bug: lilypond is unable to play a midi file.  The error report is  
"can't find file: `init.midi'"

Those appear to be warnings, not errors, but since no audio output is  
produced I assume they're the cause of the problem.  There is no file  
named init.midi on my system.

This is OS X:
Darwin localhost 6.6 Darwin Kernel Version 6.6: Thu May  1 21:48:54 PDT  
2003; root:xnu/xnu-344.34.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC  Power Macintosh powerpc

Lilypond version is 1.6.7.
