glitch in installing lilypond

Hi, I'm a non-Unix-user trying to instal Lilypond under MacOS X.

Got along pretty well - got fink going, found how to change the setting 
about trees, told it to install lilypond-unstable and it did lots of 
stuff. But it gave up in the end because it can't find 'ar'.

checking for ar... missing_ar
configure: error: No ar utility found.


My Unix book says 'ar' is a standard utility. I'm not sure what to do 
about getting it, preferably in a form that ignoramuses like me can use.

Can you help at all?
