I tried to build Lily on a machine where I don't have mftrace installed.
So, I first used
make -C mf get-pfa
to install the Type1 fonts but when I later run make to build everything
else, it stops in mf with an error message the mftrace is missing.
No .tfm or .afm files are built.
The workaround is to use 'make -k', but that shouldn't be necessary if
you want make get-pfa to be really useful.
