Yes, they normally do, but you can easily change that behaviour, for example in orchestral scores, see http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.2/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Hiding-staves.html This is exactly the same mechanism that's used in lyrics by default. /Mats
