Are you using ash or bash for /bin/sh?

What happens if you invoke this by hand, in ash maybe:

   ash
   latex \\nonstopmode \\input A-falusi-kislany_mel.tex >/dev/null 2>&1
   latex \\nonstopmode \\input sample2e >/dev/null 2>&1

anything useful in the tex .log files?
