Hello,
In several prominent parts of the lilypond web:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.5/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Engraving.html#Engraving
http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/introduction.html
one reads that the sharp lines and mechanical layout of Henle
editions are "typical faws of computer print: the staff lines are
thin, the weight of the flat symbol matches the light lines and it has a
straight layout with sharp corners".
As far as I'm aware Henle hand-engrave all of their editions, and are
quite proud of it to boot! See:
http://www.henle.de/usa/info/notenstich.htm
They say that their "razor sharp" typography is a result of this labor-
ious process, "for the practiced eye of the engraver is still superior
to the computer".
Cheers,
Bruce.
