IIRC, Lily < 1.6 did this.  It was a few years ago, at any rate.  I 
believe that
you can trigger this behavior with something like
#(ly:set-option 'old-relative)

No guarantees; if you're curious about this, search the mailists (or old
manuals) for more info.
