Many thanks for replying. Timing was great as I'd set this aside to start
digging this weekend. I used the shell script identified in message 15 and
make has progressed a lot farther ... tracing metafonts right now.
To dev team, esp. Graham - there is an explicit gcc 3.1.1 reference on the
2.5.16 Installation pages in the section "Flex-2.5.4a and gcc-3.x":
"Flex 2.5.4a does not produce g++-3.1.1 compliant C++ code. To compile
LilyPond with gcc-3.1.1 you may do"
Changing that to "... To compile Lilypond with gcc-3.1.1 or higher" might have
helped me.
Another aspect threw me: I'd successfully compiled Lilypond 2.4.5 from scratch
without issues, but with the same gcc and flex.
