Confusion in documentation and/or implementation of auto beam settings

Hi,

I am a bit confused about the exact rules for the automatic beam 
settings. One of the default rules is (corresponding to)

#(override-auto-beam-setting '(end 1 32 4 4) 1 8)

but apparently it also applies to situations like
   c8 d32 d d d e2. |
where the 32nd notes begin, not end, on the specified beat.
Then, what does the following mean?
#(override-auto-beam-setting '(begin 1 32 4 4) 1 8)

The documentation is a bit confusing here. At the end of "Setting 
automatic beam behavior", it says
"The same syntax can be used to specify beam starting points."
and then goes on with yet another example with '(end ... ).
