Maybe the images don't show in
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.11/input/test/collated-files
in Safari because there are too many images, i.e. Safari might disable
images huge loadings.
IMO it is likely a bug in Safari; in this case, you should file a bug
report to Safari developers.
