http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1612just as an extra clarification: the auto beam engraver only knows if it can emit a beam after the timestep has already passed, so "LilyPond to cleanly ID the moment at which staff crossing actually happens" is not really feasible.
