I am probably way out of my depth here, but I came across this (after
reading Valentin's comment about how to combine the \foo so that it sits
between 'fon' and 'fop'.

I cannot see any specific mention about trailing '\' but as I say, I am a
bit out of my depth here. But could this be a relatively simple thing with
@syncodeindex function?
